Azerbaijan considers petroleum products transportation via Baku-Tbilisi-Kars

Azerbaijan is considering the transportation of petroleum products via the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway, according to Emil Mammadov, Deputy Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, Report informs.

Mammadov made the announcement at the Caspian and Central Asia Oil Trade and Transportation Forum held in Baku.

He stated that Azerbaijan’s existing infrastructure in the oil sector has made the country one of the main players in the region in both crude oil and petroleum products production and supply:

“Azerbaijan Railways has an important role in this regard. In recent years, the company has implemented significant initiatives related to the transportation of products from Azerbaijan and transit through the country.”

Mammadov noted that while the BTK railway is currently mainly used for transporting other goods, the supply of petroleum products via this route is also being considered:

“It’s true that petroleum products are not currently transported via BTK. But we are evaluating the possibilities in this regard.”

The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway was commissioned in 2017 and aims to create a shorter and faster transport connection between China and Europe. This route is an important link within the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR, also known as the Middle Corridor).
