Tajikistan imported 660,800 tons of wheat worth approximately $171 million in January–June 2026, according to the country’s Antimonopoly Service.
Imports increased by 47,500 tons, or 7.7%, compared with the same period in 2025. The average import price stood at $259 per ton, up $25 from a year earlier.
All wheat was supplied by Kazakhstan, with around 60 companies involved in the imports.
At the same time, domestic wheat production declined. Tajikistan produced 510,000 tons of wheat during the first six months of the year, down by 78,000 tons, or 13.3%, from January–June 2025.
Tajikistan also imported 35,400 tons of flour worth $11.3 million in the first half of 2026. The average import price was $320 per ton.
Compared with the same period last year, flour imports rose by 11,000 tons, or 45.2%. Nineteen companies were involved in the imports.
Kazakhstan accounted for approximately 95% of the imported flour, while Russia supplied 4% and Uzbekistan 1%.
Unlike wheat production, domestic flour output increased significantly. Tajik enterprises produced 399,400 tons of flour during the reporting period, up by 95,800 tons, or 31.6%, year on year.
The wholesale price of a 50-kilogram sack of first-grade flour at processing enterprises ranged from 200 to 240 somoni. Including delivery to Dushanbe, the price reached 215–275 somoni.
At consumer markets, government agencies sold first-grade flour for between 200 and 230 somoni per sack. The Antimonopoly Service did not specify the weight of the sacks.
During the first half of the year, prices for domestically produced first-grade flour increased by 2%, while second-grade flour became 2.9% more expensive.
The rise in wheat and flour imports comes amid rapid population growth and a corresponding increase in domestic demand for flour.
According to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, Tajikistan’s population grew from approximately 6.3 million in 2000 to 10.3 million in 2024—an increase of nearly 64%. The average annual population growth rate during this period was about 2.1%.
In 2024 alone, the population increased by approximately 2%. As of July 1, 2025, Tajikistan had a population of 10.604 million.
